Unique Plumbing Supplies has turned loss into legacy, raising over £23,000 for The Epilepsy Society and reminding us what community and Christmas spirit truly mean.

As Christmas lights begin to sparkle across Hampshire, Nick and Samantha Khaira, owners of IPG member Unique Plumbing Supplies, are reflecting on a year that has tested their resilience and strengthened their belief in the power of community.

At a time when connection matters more than ever, their story is one of compassion, hope and togetherness – values that shine particularly bright during the festive season.

Founded in 2004, Unique Plumbing Supplies began as a small, passionate team of three in Eastleigh. Two decades on, it has grown into a trusted, family-run and integrity-focused merchant with five thriving branches across the south of England, including the inspirational Bathrooms by Unique showroom in Hedge End.

The business now employs 33 people and proudly serves more than 800 regular trade customers.

In a world increasingly shaped by online retail and national chains, the Khairas have stayed true to an independent way of doing business, one that values people as much as progress.

While they’ve embraced the benefits of modern technology, their core focus remains on building long-term relationships, not just transactions. They believe that knowing your customers, looking after your staff and being part of your community are what truly sets independents apart.

It’s this blend of modern capability and traditional care that has earned them a reputation for honesty, reliability and genuine service – qualities that also define The IPG network as a whole.

A caring spirit

That caring spirit was on full display this September when Nick and Samantha hosted their annual Charity Golf Day at Hockley Golf Club in Winchester.

Held in loving memory of their son, Elijah, the event raised an incredible £23,285.80 for The Epilepsy Society, supporting vital research and awareness of SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) – the condition that tragically took Elijah’s life earlier this year.

Elijah was just 20 years old when he passed away on Father’s Day, 2025. Diagnosed with epilepsy at 11, he refused to let the condition define him. A talented football referee and FA Level 4 official, he was well on his way toward his dream of officiating in the Premier League.

Alongside his sporting achievements, Elijah was studying Marine Biology at Portsmouth University, where he was later awarded a posthumous degree for his outstanding academic progress. He was known for his kindness, determination and infectious energy, qualities that continue to inspire everyone who knew him.

A celebration of life

The Golf Day that now bears his name was a heartfelt celebration of Elijah’s life and spirit. Nearly 80 golfers, including loyal customers of Unique Plumbing Supplies, suppliers and friends, came together for a day of light-hearted competition, laughter and generosity. From the ‘Beat the Pro’ challenge to the lively raffle and auction, the day was filled with camaraderie and kindness, a perfect reflection of the values that have always driven Unique Plumbing Supplies.

Nick said: “We could never have imagined raising so much. The generosity of our sponsors, customers and friends was overwhelming. We can’t get our son back, but by supporting The Epilepsy Society, we’ve found some comfort and purpose. Elijah would have loved this day being all about him.”

To date, the Khaira family’s incredible fundraising efforts, including more than £12,000 in online donations through Elijah’s memorial page – have already made a meaningful impact by supporting research into SUDEP and raising awareness for families affected by epilepsy.

For Nick, Samantha and their team, the event wasn’t just about charity; it was about community, the same spirit that underpins their business. Being independent means being connected: supporting local trades, giving back to the people who support you and standing shoulder to shoulder through good times and bad.

As the festive season approaches, the Unique Plumbing Supplies team remind us that true success goes beyond the balance sheet, it’s defined by purpose, compassion and care. This Christmas, they encourage us to share the most valuable gifts of all: kindness, a sense of community and hope for others.
