Jason Cunningham shares his top cutting tools that make the job quicker and cleaner.

Pipe cutting is part of a plumber’s daily routine, but it can be challenging when working in cramped spaces with limited access, handling tough materials like steel, or large-diameter pipes where precision is vital. Achieving a clean, straight cut isn’t always easy, and there’s the risk of damaging nearby pipework or struggling with awkward angles. When the cut is clean, fitting and finishing go smoothly. When it isn’t, the result can be burrs, leaks, wasted materials and time lost. That’s why manufacturers continue to refine pipe cutting tools to deliver cleaner results. KNIPEX’s cutters, for example, cover everything from copper to plastics and multilayer systems. Here are some examples of how the right tool can make all the difference on site.

One-handed work

Cutting copper, brass or stainless steel pipes isn’t always straightforward and the last thing an installer wants is to be fiddling with tools that need two hands or constant adjustment. What’s needed is a cutter that grips securely, is easy to adjust and leaves a clean.

The TubiX range has a patented QuickLock system so installers need just one hand to clamp the cutter firmly onto the pipe while the cutting wheel positions itself exactly where it needs to be. The standard TubiX covers diameters from 6-35mm and has a removable deburring tool and a spare cutting wheel in the handle. For bigger systems, the XL version extends the range to 76mm, while the pocket-sized TubiX S handles 3-30mm pipes in tight corners. Just 77mm long, it can rotate freely in confined shafts or behind walls and it gives 20% more torque and a secure grip, even in tricky conditions.

Cutting waste pipes

When cutting plastic waste pipes it’s really important to achieve a clean, square and smooth cut. A rough finish can lead to poor connections, leaks or even having to re-cut and adjust.

The DP50 and DPT50 pipe cutters are designed to cut and chamfer everyday PVC and PP waste pipes up to 50mm in diameter. Quick to use and with a double-ended blade that swaps over without tools, they simultaneously bevel each pipe end to create a clean, neat, adhesiveready edge. That chamfer helps ensure glue spreads evenly and joints are properly sealed, reducing the risk of leaks. The DP50 cuts wall thicknesses of 1.8-2.4mm, and the DPT50 cuts from 2.5-3.5mm.

Small and versatile

A multi-purpose, all-rounder tool that offers versatility across different types of jobs is always handy.  The KNIPEX BiX is a pocket-sized tool that fits in your palm and makes burr-free, precise cuts whether it’s plastic pipes, drip sleeves or sealing sleeves. Sections are held firmly in place during cutting, while the rotating blade can be flipped to suit the material. It comes with two spare blades stored in the body of the tool and the option of an additional eight-blade pack.

No crushing

When working with multilayer systems, keeping the pipe intact is vital as any compression or distortion can compromise reliability. Enter the KNIPEX Pipe Cutter for composite and plastic pipes, known fondly as the ‘pizza cutter’. Officially a multilayer and composite pipe cutter, it earned its nickname due to its distinctive wheel design. The freely rotating cutting wheel allows the pipe to turn with minimal friction, making each cut up to 60% easier while leaving a precise, uncrushed edge.
